Accounting for Building and Construction
From homes to offices, major infrastructure projects to renovations — you and your team keep Sydney housed, moving, and protected. Your exceptional hard work — often in challenging weather and difficult circumstances — is invaluable. But, it also means you have little time or inclination to address necessary paperwork.
On top of the building work itself, you’re also fighting tight deadlines, battling with volatile material prices, and struggling with sub-contractors — all while trying to work through ever-changing construction accounting regulations, tax compliance, and financial admin.
You need help and guidance — you need DSV Partners.
As an experienced accountant for builders, we ease your financial burdens. Whether you’re a contractor, developer, bricklayer, or renderer — we help you manage cashflow, remain compliant, elevate profitability, and focus on growth. In short, we address the numbers, while you stay focused on your construction.
Why You Need a Building and Construction Company Accountant
With every brick you lay, foundation you dig, or air con unit you install — you have to stick to strict statutory building regulations. And, the same applies to your accounts.
With construction having its own particular set of financial obligations and compliance duties, your tough day-to-day job is made even harder. From GST to BAS, payroll requirements to the pressures of small margins — your responsibilities seem never-ending.
Your Business Has To Work Through…
Project Costing
Estimating expenses, recording transactions, calculating revenue, and figuring out profitability for every single job.
Volatile Market
When the economy takes a downturn, the building industry is the first to feel the impact.
Cashflow
Juggling upfront material expenses, project delays, and slow customer payments.
Unpredictable Costs
Erratic supply chains, and fluctuating material costs.
Sub-Contractor Compliance and Payments
From superannuation (where required) to managing contractor payments and TFN compliance.
GST Obligations
Understanding and using GST rules, particularly with residential builds and the complex margin scheme.
Convoluted Tax
Construction industry deductions, plant depreciation, FBT, PAYG, GST, and general income tax.
Disputes and Delays
Weather issues, supply challenges, project scope adjustments, and financial disagreements.
Asset Inventory Management
recording, depreciating, and replacing your high-value vehicles, machinery, and tools.
Award Wages, Payroll, and Salaries
Ensuring the correct wages for differing trades to ensure compliance.
The above list is just a small representation of the financial matters you have to tackle in the construction industry every day. DSV Partners delivers trustworthy guidance, advice, and practical assistance to ease your accounting pressures.

Construction Accountants FAQs
What Should Be Included on a Construction Worker Tax Deduction Checklist?
Generally speaking, it should include items such as tools, safety equipment, mobile phone expenses, training costs, and travel fees. However, it’s best to speak with DSV Partners first — we can give you specific advice on what is allowable in your unique business.
What Is TPAR?
TPAR stands for the Taxable Payments Annual Report.
If you operate a business in the construction or building sector, it is mandatory to report payments made to contractors. TPAR must be submitted on or before the 28th of August each year. Furthermore, from the 22nd of March 2025, the ATO will apply a late lodgment penalty for failure to lodge TPAR for previous years. The penalty starts from $330.
DSV Partners will happily help you with this document requirement.
How Do You Manage Cashflow in a Construction Project?
In the building industry, cashflow demands careful tracking of your outgoing payments, retentions, supplier invoicing, and overdue accounts. Furthermore, you need to be budgeting and forecasting project costs accurately.
DSV Partners will guide you through these necessary procedures to ensure a smooth and reliable cashflow.
How Does GST Work With New Residential Property?
GST on new residential properties can be complex — typically involving the margin scheme, which permits GST to be calculated on profit margins instead of sale prices. This can be an effective way to improve cashflow.
But, with strict rules for calculation and eligibility, you need guidance. Speak to DSV Partners.
